Andrew Goodwin believes that the traditional narrative analyses don't particularly apply to pop videos. He thinks this because pop videos have a different style in portraying a storyline (narrative) in comparison to films and novels. The reasons for the difference between pop videos and films are because:
Pop videos are built around songs - Most songs typically don't possess the traditional narrative structures
The pop video contains both the singer and the narrator as a character
The singer often looks directly at the camera - This is an extension of a performance and trying to involve the viewer at home with the performance
Illustration:
This is where the video tells the story of the lyric "Chris Brown - Fine China". His dancing in the song portrays the love he has for a girl, which is also the topic of the song.
Amplification:
This occurs when the videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning. "Kanye West - Through the wire" Throughout this video, there are images which add meaning to the video and help the audience visualise & understand. Disjuncture:
This is where there is little connection between the lyrics and or where the video contradicts the lyric. "Michael Jackson - Man in the mirror" Is an example of this because the song is about self-realisation, however the video is based around radical world events.
Erica – I’m afraid I am very worried about your blog at the moment. I’m glad you went and explored Andrew Goodwin after I gave you the handouts in class, but you don’t appear to have done any other work for nearly 2 weeks now. I appreciate your group is probably on the verge of posting up the pitch which will account for a few more posts, but that doesn’t account for you not posting anything for over 9 days yourself. We’d expect over 30 posts at this point – you only have 13. Do feel that you could come to workshop at any time to do some of your individual posts. You could work on the synergy task I gave you, analysing the music videos post or analysing the website for Eliza Doolittle. Any of these tasks would show you are putting in some effort. Your blogging skills are good – you are embedding from youtube, using gifs and you have timetoast and prezi too. You just need to show you are doing more work! I’m sure you are working on the project – you’re not supplying us with the evidence. So make a good effort to catch up.
